Work Starts to Lower Noise Level on A61 near Dronfield

A two-mile stretch of the A61 near Dronfield will be re-surfaced by Derbyshire County Council in a bid to reduce excess noise levels.

The work will start on Friday 11 September at 6 pm and will continue until Monday morning, and then again on the following two weekends.

The road will be completely re-surfaced and re-lined, the crash barriers will be repaired and there will be maintenance work on the bridges.

The A61 will be closed from the Bowshaw roundabout to Whittington Moor roundabout, with diversions in place.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Simon Spencer, said: “We’ve decided to do this work over three weekends and work through the night to get it done as quickly as possible.

“We know that this will cause considerable disturbance to residents while the work is taking place, but think this is preferable to the work lasting for many weeks. We apologise in advance for the disturbance this will cause.

“This is a busy road running through the middle of town and there will always be some noise associated with it. But we hope by resurfacing this stretch, it will deal with the more recent noise issues which have arisen since the road was surface dressed last summer and get us back to levels that are comparable with what the road was like before.”

The road is being re-surfaced from the Bowshaw roundabout to just over half a kilometre south of Gosforth Lane, adjacent to the Hilltop area, at a total cost of £600,000.
